4.3.2.1 Medical Providers Trained to Work with Sexual Assault Survivors
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) are healthcare providers who have been trained in how to interact with and collect evidence from sexual assault survivors.
This includes taking a medical forensic history, taking a detailed physical and emotional assessment, taking detailed written/electronic and photographic documentation, collecting and managing forensic samples and providing emotional support and resources.
The trained nurse examiner testifies in any legal proceedings related to the examination, ensures the proper chain of custody and that the integrity of the samples is maintained so that evidence will be admissible in court.
The trained nurse examiner collaborates with others in the community who provide unique services to sexual assault survivors, including advocates, law enforcement, crime lab personnel, child protection services and attorneys.
With training, these professionals ensure that the approach to sexual assault survivors in the community is survivor-centered and compassionate, resulting in a successful criminal justice response.
For more information on how to access this training for the health centers where you advocate, see the ‘Resources’ section.
