4.4 Evidence Kit Instructions for Healthcare Providers

If you are working with healthcare providers who have not been trained in sexual assault evidence collection, they may still be willing to collect evidence in a medical exam.

The following, are the standardized directions for evidence collection from sexual assault patients.

While healthcare providers may need to reference these instructions on your device, it’s best if they access this information on their own device, if possible.

This will help to instill a sense of autonomy and self-directed learning on the part of the provider and help to prevent you from crossing any sensitive boundaries.

PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU AND THE HEALTHCARE PROVIDER HAVE READ THE DIRECTIONS COMPLETELY PRIOR TO BEGINNING THE EXAM.

IF YOU ARE RESPONDING TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE, READ THE SECTION, ‘RESPONDING TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE’, FIRST!

IF THE PATIENT NEEDS TO URINATE AND DRUG-FACILITATED RAPE IS SUSPECTED, READ THE SECTION, ‘PATIENT ASSESSMENT AND URINE COLLECTION’.

As this section is written for healthcare providers, you will notice a shift in tone and vocabulary.
